There are three main ways to make money from TikTok:

  • earning money directly from TikTok through its Creator Fund

  • partnering with brands to post sponsored content

  • selling your own merchandise via the platform

To get in a position where you can start making money, you’ll need to follow these key steps:

  • build your following – you can start attracting the attention of brands with around 50,000 followers

  • identify a niche – if you have a smaller number of followers, developing a niche such as history or fishing can help you to get noticed

  • post regularly – make sure you’re consistent and don’t lose momentum by taking long breaks between posts

  • jump on trends – TikTok is known for its viral dances and music videos – can you incorporate the latest trend into your content?

  • engage with your followers – the more interaction you have with your followers, the better your sponsored posts will perform

LIVE Gifting

While maybe not as lucrative as a brand collaboration, hosting a livestream can bring in money too, but the path toward getting actual money in this way is a long and winding one. When you host a TikTok LIVE stream, users buy virtual coins, which can be used to buy virtual gifts. Gifts are converted into diamonds, which are distributed as funds to creators, minus TikTok’s 50 percent cut.

The precise value of a diamond is not something TikTok has officially made public. Thankfully though, users have figured it out for themselves. There are some very helpful breakdowns here and here, but what you need to know is that one diamond equals about 5 cents. So for every 100 diamonds, creators earn roughly $5, which becomes $2.50 after TikTok takes its cut.

Like the Creator Fund and Creator Marketplace, there are some restrictions on who can participate in LIVE Gifting. To host a live stream you must have more than 1,000 followers and be 16 or older. To then receive gifts in conjunction with your livestream, you must be at least 18 years old.

When you go live, users can send you gifts in real time. And at the end of your stream, a summary will show you the coin value of the gifts you received. To see how many diamonds you’ve earned and withdraw funds, tap ‘Balance’ under ‘Settings and Privacy’ and then tap ‘LIVE Gifts.’

Analysing data can help you to see what’s working and whether your audience is engaging with your posts. This information could be valuable if you want to show brands why they should partner with you.

To view your analytics on TikTok, visit your profile, tap the three dots in the top right-hand corner, select ‘Creator Tools’ and then select ‘Analytics’.

Your analytics will be split into three sections:

  • Overview – here you can check follower growth, profile views, video views, and engagements over different time periods

  • Content – this allows you to analyse the performance of each video you post, but data is only available for the last seven days

  • Followers – from this tab you can see where you’re audience is from and at what times they’re most engaged

Strategy No. 3: Get Paid by TikTok Itself

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance launched a $200 million creator fund in summer 2020, but the payouts from this fund are modest. Industry consensus is that TikTok will pay you two to four cents per 1,000 video views. 

It’s never a good look for your app when a popular creator posts a video saying you suck, as Hank Green did in January 2022 with a YouTube post entitled “So… TikTok Sucks.” Since TikTok is growing like wildfire, more users mean more videos, and more videos mean more competition for the same pool of money. Consider pairing this strategy with one of the other previously mentioned approaches to diversity your money-making efforts.

Additionally, if you have a knack for making videos that go viral, you may want to take that same skill set and apply it on a platform that has heftier rewards for such a skill set, such as YouTube or Instagram.

No matter what strategy you decide to pursue, finding success on TikTok long-term will be contingent on you posting content you actually want to create week in and week out.

“Don’t try to be like someone else already on the platform,” says Farzin. “That’s rule number one. Talk about the subjects that you really are passionate about, be authentic, and be yourself.”

How Much Do TikTokers Make?

How much you make on TikTok hinges heavily on how you are leveraging the app and incorporating the strategies mentioned above. A common denominator among these strategies is to build an excited, engaged audience; when you do this, brand partners are more likely to make the first move and approach you.

“I’ve developed some really good brand partnerships with Amazon, Kodak, Panasonic, and the Container Store,” says Farzin. “The majority of these brands reached out to me, which is exciting, you know?”

When we see TikTokers putting up huge revenue numbers, brand deals and paid partnerships are usually a substantial contributor.

How many followers do I need to get paid by TikTok? 

It is estimated that it’s possible to earn 2 to 3 cents per 1,000 views. So, to win 30 euros, we will need our video to have more than one million views. Going viral is one of the ways you can reach that number. You can achieve this by doing an original hashtag challenge.

In September the platform launched The TikTok Creators Fund, for which they allocated a fund of 60 million euros for thousands of creators across Europe. The aim of this project is to reward TikTokers for their talent and creativity with money. The requirements to join are: be over 18 years old, have more than 10.000 followers,  have more than 10.000 views in the last 30 days and publish original content according to the TikTok community standards.

When you join the TikTok Creator Marketplace, you create a profile where brands can see your analytics. Whenever a brand is interested in working with you, you’ll get a notification with campaign details and a contract to sign. After that, you’ll submit your video to make sure it meets the guidelines. 

Land brand partnerships 

Brand partnerships are a great way to make money on TikTok, and you can get them even if you aren’t part of the TikTok Creator Marketplace. 

The first step to getting brand partnerships on TikTok is building your following. Here are some ways to do that: 

  • Define your niche
  • Interact with other TikTokers in your niche
  • Engage with your followers
  • Post on a consistent schedule– at least twice per day around the same times
  • Use trending music and hashtags
  • Check your analytics often

Try to include some brand-favorite content types in your posts. These include product reviews, hacks, how-tos, etc. You’ll also want to build a presence on other platforms (especially Instagram). Having an audience across multiple platforms makes you more competitive.

Make sure brands can contact you easily by clicking on your TikTok profile. You’ll want to link your other social media handles and include your business email address. Additionally, you can include a message to brands in your bio saying you are open to sponsorships. This message will take up space in your bio that could be used for keywords, though, so you might want to test both options for a month each and compare the analytics and opportunities you get during those two time periods.
